Ridin’ Herd … Me and My Dawg-Friend!
The dog at my feet
He’s fast asleep
He run herd, hard today
So, he’s earned his keep (alternate words: To earn)
Sleep on my friend (alternate word: dawg-friend)
‘Cause the work never ends
We got stallions in the pens
Mares & foals around the bend
I see the suckling of the weanlings
And the rompings of them yearlings
Rest on tonight
As tomorrow, we got brandings
When the moon goes down
And before the sun comes up
It’ll be breakfast time my dawg-friend
We’ll drink morning coffee from the same cup
I think about my woman
At the ranch, 3 days behind me
DAWG! … we gotta move all the steeds
Let’s get’em home by Friday
The mountains, the grasses
The flowers and passes
Down thru the canyons
“Get on home!” for biscuits and molasses (alternate word: oats)
I ride hard in this saddle
Good saddle blanket under pommel
My hands hurt and are ‘bloodied’ (alternate word: ‘calissed’)
My rope’s rosined and balanced
My rifle’s clean
But not so my boots
My chaps seen better days (alternate word: hat’s)
And my lariat still hoops
So, sleep on my dawg-friend
Tomorrow’s another day
And the hard work never ends
We got horses to move away
Back to the ranch
Where more work begins
At nightfall … you’ll rest again (alternate words: day’s end)
My good faithful and trusted, ‘Dawg-Friend!” (alternate line:My trusted good friend)
